  • Judit!

Taking flight

Grounded in Compassion – the Word of the Day -- , our imaginations took flight with four very engaging speakers this Wednesday.

Djanira, as Toastmaster of the Evening set the mood with the theme of Spring, a time of colour and vitality. She led the session smoothly and with a confident hand.
Maria volunteered a joke about a stutterer who had practiced hard to say only two words well: ‘Vermouth’, and eventually ‘coffee’. And so the waiter goes: With or without milk? Our poor man says: Vermouth!

Ana Villar loves a good challenge. Born ‘fortunately’ on 1st April, she told us why and how we could, like she does, play good jokes especially on two important dates: 1st April (being April Fool’s Day) and 28th December (El Día de Los Inocentes) simply because we could get off without penalties; confess our love without risks; and literally test how much we’re loved with (if you’re a woman)…a pregnancy kit!

Ever felt hounded by Murphy’s Law? Well Liz certainly did. Indignant and dumbfounded by everything that did go wrong on the trip to her mother’s homeland in Sicily, Liz and her friend decided to fight back and have a whale of a good time. For every missed train, closed embassy and soaked clothes, there were eventually glimpses of sunshine and encounters with ‘Italianos guapíssimos’.

Jose Luis opened our eyes to the usability of many things, appliances and interfaces we use in daily life. Better ergonomics, better design and thoughtfulness on the part of creators (of ubiquitous items such as tactile phones) lead to better decisions with less risk or time employed.

How many of us have been swept away by iconic films such as 2001: A Space Odyssey and Blade Runner? How many grew up believing that advanced technology would be liberating? Isn’t it enslaving instead: making us lazy, stupid and illiterate? M.A. Garcias led us through such dreams and disillusionment, and left us with a profound thought: Don’t leave it to robots or technology to solve our grave problems (which are of our own making).

As Evaluators, Maria Lozano, Pilar De Obeso, Sonia Rosales and Kai Steinbach shared their insights with keenness and thoughtfulness. They were ably led by General Evaluator Joan Fabregat.

Marisol chose an original Table Topic: Think of a new name for Barcelona Toastmasters. Well, we had pretty good suggestions from Cristine Twarog, Dimitri Uralov (of Prestigious) and Kai who gave us First Barcelona Toastmasters (for we were the first Barcelona club to charter).
Note: We are doing well with additional Monday sessions. The next is Monday 28/03/2011 ASET

JibbJabbin' with the SoulTrain

This night has been full off surprises and proper TM spirit! Dimitri and Clara, our guest of honor from a fellow TM Club were happy to experience how we organize our ever faster growing TM club.

Toastmaster Peter set off to whistle for our team's strength embarking on a beautiful analogy of Rugby marking its robust cornerstones: placar- perfeccionar- el equipo.

Before the speakers started Maria set the scene with her beautiful joke about the effectiveness of consulting for bar tenders: You'd be surprised to find out how much time you can safe yourself as a waiter wearing a spoon in you upper pocket, and a subtle cotton thread attached your best kit's zip.

We congratulate Xavier after having been a member of the club for such long time to finally do and receive his ribbon for the Icebreaker on ¿Quién es este chico? that gave us a nice inside into where he comes from and where he is heading: to share the objective of becoming a better speaker and to improve his body language.

Laura decoded the mystery of the ever

reoccurring question: Will anyone ever win in a promotional contest? In her third speech she quickly got to the point and listed the deepest secrets of how to benefit from promotional contest and lotteries: Go for brands and products that are nearly forgotten, like peanuts; choose only one chain of supermarkets; be the first one in the promotions; call or enter the competition between 4am and 6am, or just go for the “regalo seguro” option, where you might have to buy more of the same product, but in the end, once you have collected all you little stamps your assured to win!! Laura received her TM Club Pin, and can now be a mentor for other club members.

Pilar as the last but not least speaker of the night brightened everyone's faces with her astonishing accomplishment: In only one evening she not only bagged her emergency hand luggage, but 3 titles in one row: CC + ALB + CL!! Who would have known that this was all due to one coffee mug exported from Mexico. Personally, I loved her pragmatic attitude: if you ever wanna wake up with your hairstyle already done- shave it all off, and you are freed for a year! We all congratulate Pilar for her amazing results and thank you for the inspirational message that the impossible can get in its place (“lo imposible puede llegar a su sitio”).

Peter had a special and well appreciated surprise for Pilar and the whole TM Club that JibJabb-ed with the Soul Train animation/movie: Great Funkin Job!! The whole room was filled with laughter and applause!

Great Team!

Finally, Cormac made some interesting and valuable points in his “informative speech” about the process of evaluation. Rather than being super sweet or super nasty, the appropriate communications skills are necessary for the speaker to learn from the evaluation. Although we can read about this in our manuals, I think it's very important to underline the evaluation's objectives: to better public speaking skills and to build and maintain self-esteem. This is best done by repeating the evaluation's objectives and to speak in a “positive” way and from the “I” position. After all, this is why we are all here, to get the motivation to become a better communication master.

Our last smiles and laughs we owed to the 3 Table Topic Speakers: Tania who convinced the Parliament why tomatoes should grow on trees from now on, Paul who introduced the new fruit “uvaceituna” and Cristian who made clear that a car's motor can run on sunflower oil.

M.A. Shared the following important data:

TM Club Barcelona can't actually accept any new members as of now.

Monday 14/03/2011 ASET (additional TM meeting; details Kai)

Important dates:

23/03/2011: speech contest

27/04/2011: sesió a català

25/05/2011: Sesión con sombreros!

It’s carnival time!

Yes, its Wednesday again and Lady Toastmaster Marion Chevalier who just has been back from a trip to beautiful Venice invited us to one of those cool Carnival-After-Hour-Private-Parties which to her experience are much more fun than the official Venice carnival were locals dress beautifully and tourists just stare and take photos. Let’s have some fun then!

So, just wait until we have put on our carnival hats and the show can begin. However, not before the guardians of the party are presented. Policewoman Celine warned us that she would not forgive any grammatical mistake and surely take us into handcuffs whereas Sheriff Xavi was sure to give a “multa” to anyone passing the red timekeeper light. Maria-little-red-riding-hood asked us to not only beware of the wolf but tonight especially of all the “ahs” and “ohs” and “ehms”.

The talks started with Marcos Mota the “stubborn dreamer” who fascinated us not only with his childhood dream of leaving his Brazilian home Sao Paulo for going to college in the US. With jokes and impeccable American English, he was magically managing his slides and talking with such an ease that most of us hardly could believe that this was his Ice Breaker!

Then Inma Lopez, who one day woke up from a dream realizing that she was living in a city which to her is the “7th wonder of the world”, started teasing us with mouth-watering images of Andalusian tapas. The journey went on with some live flamenco and photos of a real architectural jewel. A very warm and moving speech were you could literally feel the affection she has for her home town ….. and with many of us already having mentally planned our next trip to Granada!

But this was by far not he last empowering speech of the evening! Peter Brenchley started to make us think with his introductory question “Are you happy?” In a very playful and inspiring way, he persuaded us not to wait for that particular moment to be happy, such as a better job ... the perfect partner … the day your children leave home … the divorce from your formerly perfect partner... or even the day you retire. Live is just too short for that! Start being happy today!

Theater time! Sue Chien Lee alias “The fool” invited us to Shakespeare’s world with her interpretation of King Lear where she easily jumped between the roles between of the fool, the king, his daughter and even Jackie Chan! Almost had to pinch myself to believe that I am in Toastmasters and not some London theater watching a professional play.

“But wait!”- Laura Martinez the table topic master of the evening claimed - “after all the Carnival action going on, we should not forget about this other big event … the Oscars!” So, Laura led us into the world of movies, film stars, starlets and directors while challenging some actors-to-be among us to go for an audition.

Meryl Streep, for example, had to convince a director of that special touch she would give to the role of a prison keeper and was marvelously performed by Ana Vilar. Concluding “oh, but I first have to speak to my manager”, the applause was on here side!

Antonio Banderas alias Riccardo Agostini was trying to convince star director Laura with his Italian charm to be the perfect fit for playing a Maroccan boy in her new movie.

Last but not least, Liz Calvey jumped into the shoes of Cristina Aguilera and told us so much about her talents and amazing acting experience we would never have imagined. We definitely recommend her as leading actress for that new opera movie that surely is going to be shown in a theater near you very soon!

Just after the table topics round, it was time for David “Bad Boy” González who stepped to the lectern in his Mafia outfit in order to introduce his clan “the Evaluators” consisting of Ana from Ikea alias Pilar de Obeso, Honey Bunny Kathryn Lum as well as Dave-the-carnival-grouch and Cormac whose outfit was impossible to guess.

To close the session David threatened us to send his mafia boys if we don’t put the room in order before leaving which - of course - we devotedly did. ;-)
